Albuquerque Indian School (AIS) was a Native American boarding school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which operated from 1881 to 1981. It was one of the oldest and largest off-reservation boarding schools in the United States. [2] For most of its history it was run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
The center is anchored by two Dillard's locations and a Regal 16-screen IMAX and RPX Theatre. The town center is located on the site of the original Winrock Shopping Center , which opened in 1961 as the first regional shopping mall in New Mexico .
The Albuquerque Indian School was established by Presbyterian missionaries in 1881 and moved to its longtime campus on 12th Street the following year. Operated for most of its existence by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), the institution was an industrial boarding school for Native American boys and girls, most of whom came from the Pueblos of New Mexico and the Navajo Nation.
