Senhor Don Gabriel de Cruz Vaz (also known with the title Parathavarma Pandian) (December 13, 1753 – 1808) was the ruler and freedom fighter from the Pearl Fishery Coast, in what is now southern India, who helped Maruthu Pandiyar and other freedom fighters like Veerapandiya Kattabomman and Oomaithurai. The Pearl Fishery Coast refers to a coastal area of southern India, extending along the Coromandel Coast from Tuticorin to Comorin ruled by Paravars [1] and their rulers. The coast took its name from the presence of pearls along the coast, and the numerous pearl fisheries that operated to harvest them.
Pearl fishing was an important industry in ancient Tamilakam. Pearl fishing flourished during the Sangam age. The Pandyan port city of Korkai was the center of the pearl trade. Written records from Greek and Egyptian voyagers give details of the pearl fisheries off the Pandyan coast.

This oyster along with the Pacific wing-oyster (Pteria sterna) was the subject of a pearl fishery in the Gulf of California since before the arrival of Hernando Cortez in 1535. The Spaniards quickly appreciated the value of the harvest and in 1586 declared the gathering of oysters to be a right of the Spanish crown. [10]
