The mining industry of Malawi, includes a number of gemstones and other minerals. The value of mining is dominated by the extraction of fuel minerals, particularly uranium . Malawi's production of uranium has contributed 1% to the global production of this mineral.
Kayelekera uranium mine is an open cast uranium mine 52 kilometers west [1] of the regional administrative and commercial centre Karonga in Malawi, Africa and was the country's largest mine. Production at the mine has been paused since February 2014, due to a fall in global uranium prices.

The growing mining operations and the expansion of industry in Mtwara will need reliable energy supply. To power the Coal and Iron operations the state energy firm TANESCO plans to construct a 600MW coal fired power plant of which 250MW will be used by the Iron industry and the remaining 350MW will be fed into the national grid.
