The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) is a national exam for students in grades 8-12. It's used to shortlist students for HBCSE's Mathematical Olympiad program. Students must be under 20 years old by June 30 of the IMO year and cannot have passed Class 12.

First set up in 1977 by founder George Lenchner (1917–2006), MOEMS became a public competition in 1979. [2] Lenchner, who died after decades in service to the math education community, wrote several books on elementary problem solving used by many MOEMS teachers and students.
The top 24 students are then selected and invited to a residential one week training camp. At the end of the camp, approximately 12 students are selected as a squad. The squad receives regular assignments to complete every few weeks as well as sitting the British Maths Olympiad, Australian Maths Olympiad and the APMO.

[101] A BBC documentary titled Beautiful Young Minds aired July 2007 about the IMO. A BBC fictional film titled X+Y released in September 2014 tells the story of an autistic boy who took part in the Olympiad.
