From 1966–2011 the South Iredell wrestling team was led by North Carolina and National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Bill Mayhew. Mayhew finished his coaching career with a 712-235-1 record, with his 712 wins being the most in North Carolina high school wrestling history. [3] His 1986 team won the NCHSAA state wrestling tournament championship.
