South India, also known as Southern India or Peninsular India, is the southern part of the Deccan Peninsula in India encompassing the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana as well as the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, occupying 19.31% of India's area (635,780 km 2 or 245,480 sq mi) and 20% of India's population.
The rulers of India's princely states acceded to the government of India between 1947 and 1950, and South India was organized into a number of new states. Most of South India was included in Madras state, which included the territory of the former Madras Presidency together with the princely states of Banganapalle, Pudukkottai, and Sandur.
Karnataka is the only southern state to have land borders with all of the other four southern Indian sister states. The state covers an area of 191,791 km 2 (74,051 sq mi), or 5.83 per cent of the total geographical area of India. [17] It is the sixth-largest Indian state by area. [17]
