A Sinhalese name or Sinhala name may contain two or three parts: a patronymic, one or more given names, and sometimes a surname, which was often absent in the past. [1] Full names can be rather long, and hence are often shortened, by omitting or abbreviating the family name and one of the given names, as in R. M. S. Ariyaratna.
Since 1975, women have kept their own surname when married, but until recently (2000) [dubious – discuss] they could have added the surname of the husband according to the civil code, although it was a very seldom-used practice. In recent years, the husband's surname cannot be used in any official situation.
Sinhala words of English origin mainly came about during the period of British colonial rule in Sri Lanka.
