A Bankart repair is an operation for habitual anterior shoulder dislocation. [1] The joint capsule is sewed to the detached glenoid labrum , without duplication of the subscapularis tendon . The procedure is named for the Bankart lesion , a common name for the condition it addresses.
A Bankart lesion is a type of shoulder injury that occurs following a dislocated shoulder. [3] It is an injury of the anterior ( inferior ) glenoid labrum of the shoulder. [ 4 ] When this happens, a pocket at the front of the glenoid forms that allows the humeral head to dislocate into it.
Bankart described the pathology and surgical repair of recurrent shoulder dislocation in 1923, [4] and again in 1938. [5] Although this procedure was described by Perthes in 1906, [6] Bankart is credited with popularizing the technique. [3] Thus the terms Bankart lesion and Bankart Operation remain in use.
SLAP Tear Repair of SLAP Tear. Repair of SLAP tear. Associated findings within the shoulder joint are varied, may not be predictable and include: SLAP lesion – labrum/glenoid separation at the tendon of the biceps muscle; Bankart lesion – labrum/glenoid separation at the inferior glenohumeral ligament; Biceps Tendon - exclusion of pulley ...
While the Latarjet procedure can be used for surgical treatment of most cases of shoulder dislocations or subluxation, it is particularly indicated in cases with bone defects. [4] The failure rate following arthroscopic Bankart repair has been shown to dramatically increase from 4% to 67% in patients with significant bone loss. [5]
Associated bony lesions or fractures may coexist in the glenoid such as the bony Bankart lesion. In such scenarios, surgical repair may include bony augmentation, a common example of which is the Latarjet procedure. Additional lesions such as a Bankart, SLAP tear, or biceps injury may also be present. [7]
Arthroscopic lavage is a "cleaning up" procedure of the knee joint. This short-term solution is not considered as an articular cartilage repair procedure but rather a palliative treatment to reduce pain, mechanical restriction and inflammation. Lavage focuses on removing degenerative articular cartilage flaps and fibrous tissue.
Bone healing, or fracture healing, is a proliferative physiological process in which the body facilitates the repair of a bone fracture. Generally, bone fracture treatment consists of a doctor reducing (pushing) displaced bones back into place via relocation with or without anaesthetic, stabilizing their position to aid union, and then waiting ...
