The Interstate Highways in Michigan are the segments of the national Dwight D. Eisenhower System of Interstate and Defense Highways [3] that are owned and maintained by the U.S. state of Michigan, [4] totaling about 1,239 miles (1,994 km). [2] The longest of these, Interstate 75 (I-75), is also the longest highway of any kind in the state. [5]
After nearly a decade of efforts, the first two test highways were designated, one each in the Lower and Upper peninsulas of the state and included on the 1970 state highway map. The system was created and expanded in scope c. October 5, 1970, after it was approved by the County Road Association of Michigan and the State Highway Commission.
M-55 (Michigan highway) M-55 is a state trunkline highway in the northern part of the US state of Michigan. M-55 is one of only three state highways that extend across the Lower Peninsula from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan; the others are M-46 and M-72. The highway crosses through rural forest and farmlands to connect Manistee with Tawas City.
The highway was realigned due north between Rapid River and Trenary according to the 1938 service map. US 41 was completely paved in 1951. The final two sections to be paved were in Baraga County and Keweenaw County. This December 1, 1937, MSHD map was the first to show the relocated US 41/M-28 near Teal Lake in Marquette County
