In October 2002 the name of the institute was changed to National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR). Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is a graduate medical university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [ 5 ] [ 6 ] It was established in 1965 as Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR) .
It later shifted to its present site in 1998 under the current name Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College and Hospital. It is named after Shaheed M. Dhaka Medical College has a 2600-bed [28] teaching hospital as Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) within the same compound, with 92 wards. It is a tertiary referral hospital. It has a 300-bed facility dedicated for burn and plastic surgery.
The hospital building is a 18-storey structure equipped with rooftop helipad and a ground parking facility for 180 vehicles. It has three blocks for three separate units - Burn unit, Plastic surgery unit and academic wing. It was built at a cost of 912 crore bdt.
