LaVale is located along the National Road, one of the original highways built in the United States which carried early American settlers west of the Appalachian Mountains. LaVale is a business center that contains the largest concentration of retail and the only indoor shopping mall, Country Club Mall, in the Cumberland Metropolitan area.
The Warren Glass Works Company located in South Cumberland, and the Cumberland Glass Works located at the west end of North Mechanic Street, were established in the early 1880s and would become the two major glass making firms. The industry used local coal as an economical fuel, and native pure silica sandstone in the making of the glass.
The works were part of the (larger) Principio Company, whose other holdings included the Accokeek or Potomac Ironworks on the land of George Washington's father, Augustine Washington (north of Ferry Farm near Fredericksburg, Virginia). This works was originally developed by the ironmaster England as a source of iron ore.

A trywork is a furnace, used to heat blubber from whales for the recovery of oil, on a whaling ship. The trywork is located aft of the fore-mast, and is typically constructed of brick and attached to the deck with iron braces. Two cast-iron trypots are set atop the furnace.

Standard Oil Building, also known as the Stanbalt Building, is a historic office building located at Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is a 15-story Beaux Arts skyscraper designed by Clyde N. Friz (1867-1942), one of Baltimore's best-known Beaux Arts designers, and built in 1922. The steel-frame U-shaped office building is clad in limestone.
