The bronze star is sort of the dividing line between shit you have to do truly gnarly stuff to get (silver star, distinguished service cross, medal of honor) and awards you can get in peacetime or war for being squared away. Bronze Star can only be earned in combat. Now combat can be anything from the guy who kicks down doors and kills bad guys to a shoe clerk at the highest headquarters in country. Usually this is given to E-7's and up. Most people confuse the Bronze Star with the Bronze Star with Valor.
