The Goldney family's influence in Bristol can be traced to 1637, when Thomas Goldney was sent by his father to Bristol from Chippenham in Wiltshire, to serve as an apprentice for seven years.

The area is named after Thomas Tyndall, [1] a Bristol merchant and investor in the slave trade, [citation needed] who between 1753 and 1767 bought a number of fields which then existed in the area and turned them into an ornamental park.
