The album is the result of the Temptations' collaboration with the critically acclaimed record producer Thom Bell, whom they had met eight years prior. [1] The album features two original members of the group, Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin, recurring member Dennis Edwards, and more recent members Richard Street and Glenn Leonard.
The album was also the final Temptations album for Ali-Ollie Woodson, who would be released from the group by Otis Williams in 1996, after having suffered several bouts of throat cancer. For Lovers Only was reissued in 2002 with a bonus track, a remix of "Night & Day" as included on the soundtrack to What Women Want.

The song has been frequently covered, most notably a 1970 version by Al Green, a slower-paced version without multi-lead vocals. Green's cover, the title track of his 1971 LP Al Green Gets Next to You, reached No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 11 on the R&B chart. Annie Lennox also covered the song on her 1995 album Medusa.
Now, post-“Birds,” there is a fourth song from the album that the audience has chosen, seemingly independent of Elish’s, Finneas’ and Interscope’s own efforts, at least at first.
