Law enforcement rangers will generally carry guns, interpretive rangers generally will not. Generally rangers will patrol separately, but can depend on staffing/agency/park size Well, murders definitely don’t stop just because you’re in a park.

But the original rangers carried guns. If anything, the LE enforcement rangers have a better stake to the title. Which is probably why when you go to parks, the LE get called Rangers, and the other divisions get called interp, maintenance, fees, etc. Edit: it's just another title of LE, like: deputy, officer, marshal. Interp, maintenance, fees ...

I rarely encounter Rangers when I’m in the back country, and when I do they are almost always chill. Only the law enforcement rangers carry guns, and I’ve only ever seen them in high traffic areas like entrances and visitor centers.

Why don’t park rangers carry a gun. I think this is probably the career that needs one the most. Think a rifle or a massive revolver used to fight off incoming bears or cougar. Or maybe even to hunt down escaped convicts in the woods. What just gets me is every time I see the dang park rangers out in the wilderness and whatnot they are just ...

NPS LE uses a mix of AR-15s, and normally Remington 12 gauges. Only sworn law enforcement officers carry firearms, so not every "park ranger" will carry. A standard hand gun like any cop carries is all I've seen for the most part. Except in national parks or forests near the Mexico border and known trafficking routes, then they will carry more ...

In my state, Enforcement rangers carry guns. I think its combination of many reasons. A) You would need to train those people in shooting, untrained people with guns is a very bad idea. Training costs money. Guns cost money. National parks usually aren't swimming in cash. B) Lawsuits and shit.
