The National Serigraph Society was founded in 1940 by a group of artists involved in the WPA Federal Art Project, including Anthony Velonis, Max Arthur Cohn, and Hyman Warsager. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The creation of the society coincided with the rise of serigraphs being used as a medium for fine art. [ 4 ]
In 1939, Velonis, Warsager and other artists co-founded the Creative Printmakers Group in New York City. [20] [21] About this group, Sylvie Covey wrote in Modern Printmaking: A Guide to Traditional and Digital Techniques: "The group's shared screen-printing studio introduced the silkscreen process to many serious artists who went there to have editions printed.

In the 1940s Maccoy's work was included in several of the Dallas Museum of Art exhibitions of the National Serigraph Society. [5] [6] [7] In 1947 Maccoy moved to Los Angeles, California where he taught at the Otis Art Institute and was a founder of the Western Serigraph Society. [4] He died on March 18, 1981 [1] in Los Angeles. [2]

Velonis was born into a relatively poor background of a Greek immigrant family and grew up in the tenements of New York City. Early on, he took creative inspiration from figures in his life such as his grandfather, an immigrant from the mountains in Greece, who was "an ecclesiastical painter, on Byzantine style."
