Copper Falls Park lies near the west end of the Penokee-Gogebic Mineral Range, a ridge of rock formations that stretches from Ashland County 80 miles to Lake Gogebic in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Copper was mined in the area during the Civil War, and in the 1880s there were two copper mines near where the log footbridge now is. [5]

Dick Poorbaugh, co-owner of Grandpa's Cheesebarn, which sponsored Candy Cane Trail, said the company's goal is to give something to the entire city of Ashland to enjoy during the Christmas season.
It was named after conservationist and influential University of Wisconsin professor Aldo Leopold. The trail system was created on November 20, 2007, when Governor Jim Doyle signed Senate Bill 161, and dedicated on June 4, 2009.
