Although it is mostly ocean and spans many tectonic plates, Oceania is occasionally listed as one of the continents. Most of this list follows the boundaries of geopolitical Oceania, which includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
It is a part of the Lists of country subdivision flags, which is split into continents due to its size. For purposes of this article, Oceania is taken to comprise Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Other definitions of Oceania are used by geographers, economists, and oceanographers.
The United Nations geoscheme subdivides the region into Australia and New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. The UNSD notes that "the assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other affiliation of countries or territories".
