Mahishasura Mardini panel. The north wall in the cave contains a relief depicting the battle scene of the two adversaries, goddess Durga and the demon buffalo-headed Mahishasura. This panel symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. The carving is considered one of the best creations of the Pallava period.

Durga slaying Mahishasura is a prominent theme which was sculpted in various caves and temples across India. Some of the prominent representations are seen at the Mahishasuramardini caves in Mahabalipuram, the Ellora Caves, in the entrance of Rani ki vav, [14] Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu and many more temples across India.

The current priests belong to Panda Utkala Brahmins.The temple is patronised by a Senapati family. Celebrations for Navaratri and Dussehra are the major ones. The Durga is depicted in eight-armed pose slaying the demon Mahishasura.
The Mahishasur Mardini temple is situated here. The idol of Mahishasur Mardini having 12 hands is installed in the sanctum sanctorum. Shankar cave is situated 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away from the temple. The cave which is like a tunnel, is 25 feet (7.6 m) long. One can go inside the cave only by creeping since it is very small in diameter.

Cave 17 has a square plan. To the left of its entrance is single dvarapala. Further left is a niche with Ganesha image. On the right of the entrance is a niche with Durga in her Mahishasura-mardini form. The cave has an intricate symmetric lotus set in a geometric pattern on the ceiling.
