Beginning in 2001, GMC offered the same turbocharged diesel Duramax V8 engines as were available in similar Chevrolet trucks. The engine family was co-developed by GM Powertrain and Isuzu, and has gone through numerous iterations through the years. Duramax engines are paired with a heavy-duty automatic transmission from GM's Allison division. [4]
The GMT800 was the first truck application for the then-new GM Generation III V8 engines. The 4.8 L and 5.3 L versions used iron blocks and aluminum heads, while the 1999–2000 6.0 L version used cast iron cylinder heads. Later in 2005, the truck was offered at retail in Alaska, California, Florida, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Canada. For 2006–07, the truck was generally available to retail buyers throughout North America. The Parallel Hybrid Truck was discontinued for the 2008 model year with the release of the GMT900 truck line.
