The Speedwell Motor Car Company was a Brass Era American automobile manufacturing company established by Pierce Davies Schenck that produced cars from 1907 to 1914. The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 greatly damaged the Speedwell factory and inventory, and the company entered receivership in 1915 after having built an estimated 4,000 cars and trucks.
Because these cars were all stock models, Dayton Motor Car lost no time in letting the motoring public know. In 1909, a two-seater Stoddard-Dayton won the first race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, averaging 57.3 miles per hour (92.2 km/h). The first pace car ever was a Stoddard-Dayton driven by Carl G. Fisher to start the Indianapolis 500 in 1911.
Assembled VWs under license. 1954-1958 in a former bus depot as Jowett Motors until renamed as VW Motors in 1955 after Jowett Cars, also assembled at the same plant, went out of business. 1958-1986 on Fort Richard Rd. as VW Motors, which also assembled Ramblers for AMC from 1958-1962 as well as Peugeot, Škoda, Fiat, and Datsun.
