Rubus is a large and diverse genus of flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae, subfamily Rosoideae, commonly known as brambles. [3] [4] [5] Fruits of various species are known as raspberries, blackberries, dewberries, and bristleberries.
Rubus leucodermis is a deciduous shrub growing to 0.5–2.5 metres (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 –8 feet), with prickly shoots. [5] While the crown is perennial, the canes are biennial, growing vegetatively one year, flowering and fruiting the second, and then dying.
The raspberry is the edible fruit of several plant species in the genus Rubus of the rose family, most of which are in the subgenus Idaeobatus. [1] The name also applies to these plants themselves. Raspberries are perennial with woody stems. [2] World production of raspberries in 2022 was 947,852 tonnes, led by Russia with 22% of the total.
The plants are summer tipped by hand, mechanically pruned in winter and then machine harvested. The yields are generally low per acre and this is why the fruits are often expensive.
