Specialized treatment units serve individuals with severe behavioral and/or emotional problems and more than 800 professionals and paraprofessionals are employed. Corpus Christi State School opened in April 1970 as an independent school district for children with developmental disabilities. The original campus was 201 acres (0.8 km 2) in size.
Supported employment was developed in the United States in the 1970s as part of both vocational rehabilitation (VR) services (e.g., NYS Office of Vocational Services, 1978) and the advocacy for long term services and supports (LTSS) for individuals with significant disabilities in competitive job placements in integrated settings (e.g., businesses, offices, manufacturing facilities).
Created in 1967 by the Texas Legislature, the Texas County & District Retirement System (TCDRS) works with county and district employers to provide retirement, disability and survivor benefits to Texans. The system receives no funding from the State of Texas. Each plan is funded independently by the county or district and its employees.
