For the Canadian market, the mid-priced big Dodge was marketed as the Polara 440 for 1965 and 1966. This inaccuracy is without question the "440" in Dart 440 is not the engine size, as the 440 cubic inch motor didn't arrive in cars until 1967. 440 however was a trim level. The 440 was available in 1969 in the GTS package however.
Chrysler developed its first experimental hemi engine for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The XIV-2220 was an inverted V16 rated at 2,500 hp (1,860 kW). The P-47 was already in production with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine when the XIV-2220 flew successfully in trials in 1945 as a possible upgrade, but the war was winding down and it did not go into production.
In 1968, Dodge contracted Hurst Performance to build a limited number of Darts powered by the 440 cu in (7.2 L) RB big-block and 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi-powered Darts to compete in the SS/B class as the LO23 "Hurst Hemi Dart".
Following the retirement of the big-block 400 and 440 V8s by Chrysler, the 360 V8 now served as the largest-displacement engine (doing so through 2003). The long-running 225 Slant-Six returned as the standard engine (later advertised in its 3.7 L metric displacement); in 1988, it was replaced by a 3.9 L LA V6 adopted from the Dodge Dakota.
