The upper and lower intake manifold is now aluminum on the naturally aspirated models. Intake ports are mildy enlarged; 1.83 in (46.5 mm) intake valves (instead of 1.8 in (45.7 mm) as on Series II) and 1.52 in (38.6 mm) exhaust valves were introduced in 2003 engines, just before switching to Series III.
The upper intake manifold has a sticker located on the passenger side of the forward plenum denoting "Split Port Induction". For 1999 the 3.8 L in the Mustang was updated to use the split port cylinder heads originally introduced on the Windstar, but did not use IMRC, leaving all twelve intake runners open at all times.

[7] The lower intake eliminated the EGR valve. The LU3 also received a "quiet cam" to help reduce vibration at both idle and high engine speeds.
