Blackwood railway station (Welsh: Y Coed Duon) was a station on the Sirhowy Railway. It served the town of Blackwood, Caerphilly. History.
Blackwood is one of the busiest stations on the Belair line, and it is the only station on the line to have a bus interchange with connections available with many routes. Also, it and Mitcham are the only stations between Goodwood and Belair to have more than one platform in use to allow services to pass.
A new station opened on the Blackwood Junction to Alton Heights Junction line on 1 July 1905 [1] and this station closed to passengers, but it stayed open to goods traffic until 1961. Second station [ edit ]
The doubling was complete by 1 November 1864, and passenger traffic started between Ferniegair and Brocketsbrae (Lesmahagow), Blackwood and Stonehouse on 1 December 1866. At this time the Motherwell station was the old Wishaw and Coltness station, further east, and the link from Motherwell to Hamilton had not yet been built.
The first land grants in the area had been made in 1840, and various churches were established throughout the 19th century, but most development in Blackwood didn't take place until the Adelaide to Aldgate section of the Adelaide–Wolseley railway line was opened, with Blackwood railway station opening in 1883.
