John Garland Longstreet, known as Garland, was the oldest child of the General and Maria Louisa Longstreet. Garland was born in Carlisle, PA and named after his maternal grandfather, General John Garland. He was the sole survivor of the illness that overcame the other three children while living in Richmond in 1862.
