The Save Mart Companies is an American grocery store operator founded and headquartered in Modesto, California. It owns and operates stores under the Save Mart, Lucky, and FoodMaxx brands. The stores are located in northern and central California and northern Nevada. The company is owned by the Jim Pattison Group.
“This acquisition supports our group’s desire to continue our growth in the retail food business,” said the president of the company.
The Lucky brand was revived circa 2007 and is now operated as two distinct chains: Albertsons operates Lucky in Utah and Save Mart Supermarkets operates Lucky California in Northern California. In 1998, American Stores , the corporate parent of the original Lucky chain, was taken over by Albertsons, and by 1999 the Lucky brand had been retired.
Save Mart was founded in Modesto in 1952 and has since become a key player in California and Nevada. Its stores in the Bay Area were purchased from Albertson’s in 2007 and rebranded as Lucky.
Safeway also scaled back its operations in Fresno, Modesto, Stockton, and Sacramento. Save Mart Supermarkets purchased the few remaining Fresno Safeway stores in 1996. Many stores in the Eastern Division were also closed or sold in the 1987–1989 time frame, including many recent additions in the DelMarVa Eastern Shore area.
The sites have been vacant for 12 and 14 years, respectively. That will change by early 2025.
