Manischewitz (/ ˌ m æ n ɪ ˈ ʃ ɛ v ɪ t s /; Hebrew: מנישביץ) is a brand of kosher products founded in 1888 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and best known for its matzo and kosher wine. It became a public corporation in 1923 but remained under family control until January 1991, [ 2 ] when it was bought out by a private equity firm .
This kosher wine is smooth and has a fresh fruity flavor, strong cherry notes, round tannins, and delicate acidity. The delightful Montepulciano is made with up to 15 percent Sangiovese.
The wine is non-kosher and the producers cater both to Arab restaurants in places like Nazareth, Haifa, Ramallah, Jerusalem and Acre, and to non-Kosher restaurants in Tel Aviv. The Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi is reputedly one of their clients.
Hagafen wines have been called "sophisticated, classic and correct", [3] and are "rated as some of the best kosher wines in the world".
