Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) [1] was an American soldier, actor, and songwriter. He was widely celebrated as the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II, [4] and has been described as the most highly decorated enlisted soldier in U.S. history.
He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on December 30, 1968, his third nomination. He retired from the United States Army after 36 years of service as a full colonel. He was one of the most decorated soldiers in the Vietnam War and was "said to be the most decorated service member in the history of the United States".
