In Orson Welles' 1948 film adaptation of Macbeth, the role of King Duncan is reduced. 1.2 is cut entirely as well as generous portions of 1.4. Duncan I became king of Scotland after the death of his grandfather, Malcolm II, in 1034, [1] and also held the title king of Strathclyde. Malcolm was the last descendant of the male lineage descended from Kenneth I to hold the kingship, and Duncan ascending to the throne on a claim descending from his mother was highly unusual for the period.
King Duncan himself soon welcomes and praises Macbeth and Banquo, declaring that he will spend the night at Macbeth's castle in Inverness; also, Duncan's son Malcolm is announced as his heir. Macbeth sends a letter ahead to his wife, telling her about the witches' pronouncements.
Macbeth is now king: Duncan's son Malcolm has fled the country, suspicion having conveniently fallen on him for his father's murder: but Macbeth is still disturbed by the prophecy that Banco, not he, will found a great royal line. To prevent this he tells his wife that he will have both Banco and his son murdered as they come to a banquet.
The House of Dunkeld was therefore closely related to the House of Alpin. Duncan was killed in battle by Macbeth, who had a long and relatively successful reign. In a series of battles between 1057 and 1058, Duncan's son Malcolm III defeated and killed Macbeth and Macbeth's stepson and heir Lulach, claiming the throne.
