Ottawa's current borders were formed in 2001, when the former city of Ottawa amalgamated with the ten other municipalities within the former Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton. Ottawa is now a single-tiered census division, home to 1,017,449 people. [1]
The National Capital Region (NCR) (French: Région de la capitale nationale, pronounced [ʁeʒjɔ̃ də la kapital nasjɔnal]), also known as Canada's Capital Region and Ottawa–Gatineau, is an official federal designation encompassing the Canadian capital of Ottawa, Ontario, the adjacent city of Gatineau, Quebec, and surrounding suburban and exurban areas.
The Ottawa-Bonnechere Graben measures about 700 km (435 mi), running from the Montreal area on the east to near Sudbury and Lake Nipissing on the west. [2] On the east, it joins the Saint Lawrence rift system, a half-graben which extends more than 1000 km along the Saint Lawrence River valley and links the Ottawa and Saguenay Graben. [3] [4]
Lac des Chats (English: Lake of Cats), commonly known as Chats Lake, [1] [2] [3] is a lake on the Ottawa River which forms part of the boundary between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec . [ 4 ] [ 5 ] It is formed by the Chats Falls Dam and serves as the reservoir for the Chats Falls Generating Station .
