Trevor Peake Bookmaker. Trevor passed away on the 7th November, he was 87 years old and for many years he was a Racecourse Bookmaker trading as Sandy Racing and latterly as Plant Bookmakers in pitches ranging from Chester to Royal Ascot and Cheltenham to Yarmouth, as well as several Point to Point pitches.
The bookmaker is trying to hold me responsible for a line of "mistakes" leading to this problem. They claim that in their T+C's that they may adjust your account accordingly if a bet is settled incorrectly which they did later on, after I'd withdrawn the money. The problem here is: I have the £1,000 at my disposal now.
Peter Jolliffe of Poole - May still be going, but got the account closed letter back in the 1990s. Stephen Little of Bath - Possibly the last bookmaker to try to make an actual book. Statements on yellow paper each week. Got stung big-time when the Brian Wright firm got involved in the Jibereen race.
T&F were great bookies Southwark Star, been mentioned on here before, they got mangled by the Irish mob. It was actually the Star Racing gayer Ben who dropped 60 large to the Irish mob. T&F were done in at the GGs, where they took on the likes of Tabor/JP etc. Mark was a proper gent & always was gracious in defeat.
Before he became a bookmaker, Hyland was a wine taster and worked as a wine merchant on Abbey Street in Dublin for Robert E Turbett & Sons. Hyland is survived by his wife Collette, brothers Francis – who was was also an on-course layer and a former secretary of the INPBA – Robert and John as well as his sister Marguerite.
Hardly jives with the label of best-ever-bookmaker etc and he cuts a particularly uninspiring figure on the clip. Probably should have been a vicar. Any bookmaker trying to make a traditional book in the era of the exchange was bound to get ironed out.Notwithstanding Stephen Little is much older, he cut quite a sad figure at Bath races last year.
This from SkintofGreatYarmouth, It was 1978, my first day as a racecourse bookmaker's workman, at my beloved Yarmouth. I was working in the old East Ring in the centre of the course, (now defunct). I was working for a bookmaker named Albert Wood from Strelley in Nottingham. My first steps to becoming a racecourse bookmaker, hopefully.

Just had a quick search, was involved in East End gangland and clubs in Soho.

John Joyce of Hartlepool was THE bookmaker in the Northern and Scottish rings during the 60's and the 70's. He did most of his own tissues and a lot of the Northern trainers had an account with him.
