Standing 93.5 meters tall, and 117 meters with antenna, with 34 floors, it surpassed Guangzhou Hotel to be the tallest building in the country upon its completion in 1976 and remained so until 1981 when Jinling Hotel of Nanjing , 110 meters, was built.

Guangzhou Baiyun railway station is located partially on the site of the defunct Tangxi railway station , which was originally constructed in 1916. Tangxi station's northern concourse was torn down to make way for Guangzhou Baiyun station's construction. [3] In July 2019, it was announced that the station would start construction in September.
