Duval County (/ d j uː ˈ v ɔː l / dew-VAWL), officially the City of Jacksonville and Duval County, is a county in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census , its population was 995,567, [ 3 ] making it the sixth-most populous county in Florida .

The new facility is located Downtown Jacksonville, Florida; it was built starting in 2009 and opened in 2012. Duval County was created on August 12, 1822 and was formerly part of St. Johns County. Although the county's area was huge, it took more than twenty years before the first courthouse was constructed during the 1840s.
The city of Jacksonville is home to the Duval County Courthouse. The previous courthouse was constructed in 1958, and the county's population has grown by more than 50% in the past forty years. A new $190 million Duval County Courthouse was a key component of the Better Jacksonville Plan, approved by voters in 2000.
The city is a thriving metropolis with over a million citizens. Due to its consolidated city-county government structure, it has the largest municipal population among Florida cities, as well as the largest land area of any city in the contiguous United States.
