The parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, is a grade I listed building. [4] It was built between 1163 and 1177 by Richard de Lucy , with additions being made in the 13th and 14th century. The church was to eventually become the property of Henry VIII who gave it to the Provost and Fellows of Eton College in 1531.

Sittingbourne is an industrial town in the Swale district of Kent, southeast England, 17 miles (27 km) from Canterbury and 45 miles (72 km) from London, beside the Roman Watling Street, an ancient trackway used by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons.
The ecclesiastical parish was known as Newington-next-Hythe, the latter town being 2 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (4.0 km) to the south-west; the parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas. [3] Nearby there used to be a 13th-century Augustinian priory, founded in 1253 by Sir John Maunsell, who became a counsellor of King Henry III. [4]
