Asahel Porter, whom the hamlet was named for, settled a few years after 1796 in Porter Corners after removing from St. John’s Corners, another hamlet in Greenfield. Born in Massachusetts in 1768, Porter came to Greenfield in 1793 or 1794, and was a successful businessman.
