The trust was established on 1 April 2021 following the merger of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. [1] [2] [3] In 2023 UHSussex opened the new £400million Louisa Martindale Building [4] at the Brighton site.
The trust was established as East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust on 1 April 2002, taking its current name on 13 May 2011. [3] [4] In 2021 the trust bought the private hospital Spire Sussex Hospital, which is physically linked to the trust's Conquest Hospital in Hastings. It has 22 beds and two operating theatres and 129 employees.

It is a partnership between Brighton and Sussex Medical School and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. The unit opened in September 2006 and has been developed to underpin the development of the medical school and Trust's research strategy.
It was named by the Health Service Journal as one of the top hundred NHS trusts to work for in 2015. At that time it had 3161 full-time equivalent staff and a sickness absence rate of 3.33%. 77% of staff recommend it as a place for treatment and 70% recommended it as a place to work. [5]
