Malapatan, officially the Municipality of Malapatan (Cebuano: Lungsod sa Malapatan; Maguindanaon: Inged nu Malapatan, Jawi: ايڠد نو ملڤاتن;Tagalog: Bayan ng Malapatan), is a municipality in the province of Sarangani, Philippines. In 1992, the province of Sarangani was formed out of South Cotabato. Seven towns in southern and coastal section of the province (Malungon, Alabel, Malapatan, Glan, Maasim, Kiamba and Maitum) became part of the new province, leaving South Cotabato with 11 remaining municipalities. [6]

Prior to gaining separate representation, areas now under the jurisdiction of Sarangani were represented under the Department of Mindanao and Sulu (1917–1935), the undivided province of Cotabato (1935–1967), Region XI (1978–1984) and South Cotabato (1967–1972; 1984–1995).
Maitum is one of seven municipalities that make up the province of Sarangani. The other municipalities are the capital Alabel, Glan, Maasim, Malapatan, Malungon, and Kiamba. The site is located in Barangay Pinol, Maitum, hence its other name, Pinol Cave.
The passage of Republic Act No. 7228 and its subsequent ratification by plebiscite on 11 May 1992 separated South Cotabato's entire third district to create the new province of Sarangani. [6] This automatically reduced the province's representation to two districts.
