Areography, also known as the geography of Mars, is a subfield of planetary science that entails the delineation and characterization of regions on Mars. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Areography is mainly focused on what is called physical geography on Earth; that is the distribution of physical features across Mars and their cartographic representations.
Generalised geological map of Mars [1] Mars as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. The geology of Mars is the scientific study of the surface, crust, and interior of the planet Mars. It emphasizes the composition, structure, history, and physical processes that shape the planet. It is analogous to the field of terrestrial geology.
The series combines these datasets into a visual representation of Mars' surface features. This was enabled by geologic research on Mars in the 2010s. Such geographic atlases (in this case: areographic) do not focus on one theme, but landforms made by all physical geologic processes are visually presented in equal emphasis.
Areography (geography of Mars) – Delineation and characterization of Martian regions; Deuteronilus Mensae – Mensae on Mars; Fretted terrain – Surface feature common to certain areas of Mars; Geology of Mars – Scientific study of the surface, crust, and interior of the planet Mars
The following is a list of regions on Mars given the name Terra (pl. Terrae). Most cover large, rugged areas, often including outflow channels , cratering, and " chaos terrain ". They may be contrasted with the Planitia (e.g., Amazonis Planitia ) and Mare (e.g., Mare Erythraeum ), smoother regions of differing albedo .
The Amenthes quadrangle is one of a series of 30 quadrangle maps of Mars used by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Astrogeology Research Program. The Amenthes quadrangle is also referred to as MC-14 (Mars Chart-14). [1] The quadrangle covers the area from 225° to 270° west longitude and from 0° to 30° north latitude on Mars.
Coloring of the base map indicates relative elevations, based on data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter on NASA's Mars Global Surveyor. Whites and browns indicate the highest elevations (+12 to +8 km); followed by pinks and reds (+8 to +3 km); yellow is 0 km; greens and blues are lower elevations (down to −8 km).
