Formica polyctena is a species of European red wood ant in the genus Formica and large family Formicidae.The species was first described by Arnold Förster in 1850. The latin species name polyctena is from Greek and literally means 'many cattle', referring to the species' habit of farming aphids for honeydew food. [2]
Myrmeconema neotropicum's life cycle begins when a bird eats the infected ant. Upon passing through the bird's digestive system the eggs are defecated out. The eggs are then picked up by the ants and fed to their larvae. Once inside the immature ant gut the eggs migrate to the gaster where they will fully mature.
The red imported fire ant is a member of the S. saevissima species-group. Members can be distinguished by their two-jointed clubs at the end of the funiculus in workers and queens, and the second and third segments of the funiculus are twice as long and broad in larger workers.
