Carl Henke was born Fredericksburg in 1848 and is believed to be the first boy baby born to the new German colonists. In 1874, he built the original native limestone structure for John Schmidt, in Sunday House style with an outside stairway. Henke purchased the house from Schmidt in the 1880s, and added a west-wide wing in 1911. [46]
The first Catholic church in Fredericksburg was a log house built in 1848. [2] In 1861 it was replaced by a stone building, completed in 1863. [ 3 ] Now called Old St. Mary's, since 1906 this building has served several purposes, including as a schoolhouse. [ 4 ]
The Fredericksburg Historic District is located in Fredericksburg, Texas in Gillespie County. It is the oldest Lutheran Church in the Texas Hill Country and one of the oldest in Texas. The church was built by six families in 1852. On January 13, 1853, twelve founders signed its articles of organization. The cornerstones for the church were set on March 6, 1854. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1964, Marker number 10132. [1]
