The Chevrolet Corvette (C4) is the fourth generation of the Corvette sports car, produced by American automobile manufacturer Chevrolet from 1983 until 1996. The convertible returned, as did higher performance engines, exemplified by the 375 hp (280 kW) LT5 found in the ZR1.
For the 4th generation (C4), the ZR1 was the top-tier package that was available from 1990 to 1995, with a special engine designed in partnership with Lotus, after General Motors acquired Group Lotus, and with the objective of creating the world's fastest production car.
In 1990, the ZR1 option Corvette was introduced with the LT5 engine designed by Lotus and built in the Mercury Marine plant in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The LT5 engine was a four-cam (DOHC) design producing 375 hp (280 kW). The C4 ZR1 ran from 1990 thru 1995 model years. In 1991, all Corvettes received updates to the body, interior, and wheels.
In a Car and Driver test event known as “Gathering of Eagles” (1987), Callaway drove a specially-modified Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette (C4), known as the "Top Gun" project, to a top speed of 231 mph (372 km/h), winning the magazine's shootout. A production Callaway managed a best of 187.95 mph (302.48 km/h).
While the ZR1 nameplate first arrived as a go-fast package for the early C3 Corvettes, its proper introduction to the general public came during the Corvette’s fourth-generation.
