The Pembroke Welsh Corgi (/ ˈ k ɔːr ɡ i /; Welsh for "dwarf dog" [a]) is a cattle herding dog breed that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. [1] Around the 19th century, The Corgi used to be known as the Welsh Cur, Cur meaning working dog (or Cor being translated to, "to watch over," in Welsh), and Gi being the Welsh word for "dog."
His conformation show champion dog Corrin was the first Welsh Springer Spaniel to be photographed. [9] Ch. Corrin, a show dog owned by Mr A.T. Williams, photographed in two poses in 1903. Welsh Springers were recognised by The Kennel Club, after the breed had gained popularity, in 1902 under the new name of Welsh Springer Spaniel.
In Old Welsh (c. 800–1150), the name was usually rendered as Morgetuid or Margetiud. [1] The exact meaning of the first element, Mere, is unclear, although some Welsh scholars have translated it as "great" or "splendid". [1] The final element of iudd has the meaning of lord, and is found in other Welsh names such as Gruffydd and Bleidd[i]udd. [1]
