Salvia miniata, the Belize sage, is a woody-based herbaceous perennial plant from Belize and the Mexican state of Chiapas. It typically grows on shaded mountain hillsides at 600 m (2,000 ft) elevation. The single flowers are clear red, with an orange undertone, about 2.5 cm long. The flowers grow in whorls on inflorescences up to 30 cm long.

The ecoregion is almost entirely located in Belize, with a few very small tracts in Mexico and Guatemala. [1] The ecoregion is spread across several small, disconnected sites. The inland sites are in the center and north and on plains and lowland terrain. The coastal, southern sites are more fragmented. [1]
Rocky Point, within Bacalar Chico, is the only location in Belize where the barrier reef meets the shore. The point is ‘rocky’ because a fossilized Pleistocene reef lies exposed at the surface. Within the park, all five species of cats native to Belize have been recorded, including the jaguar and puma.
