Hugh Owen Thomas (23 August 1834 – 6 January 1891) was a Welsh orthopaedic surgeon. He and his nephew Robert Jones have been called "the Fathers of orthopaedic surgery". Thomas was descended from a line of Welsh bone setters and placed great importance on rest in treatment of fractures.
The hospital moved some 10 miles north-west to its present site near Oswestry as the Shropshire Orthopaedic Hospital in 1921 [3] and became the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in 1933. [2] The hospital took in badly-injured patients under the Ministry of Health's Emergency Medical Service during the Second World War. [2]
