The 1972 Chevelle SS top engine was rated at 270 net hp (201 kW), conforming with GM's decree that all engines would be rated at their net engine ratings. All other engines on the SS roster were unchanged from 1971. 1972 was the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 cid engine and was not even mentioned in the 1972 Chevelle brochure.
Between 1966 and 1969 the L78 was the highest-horsepower engine available in Chevrolet's intermediate line via a Regular Production Option (RPO). Despite this, in 1969 an L72 427 cu in (7.0 L), 425 hp (317 kW) engine could be ordered in an intermediate via a Central Office Production Order (COPO).
Starting in 1968, the L72 once more became a factory option for the big Chevys. In 1969, through a Central Office Production Order, one could order an intermediate or pony car with an L72. The COPO option bypassed an internal rule that disallowed engines above 400 cu in (6.6 L) on cars other than the full sized or Corvette.
The 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 was introduced in the 1965 Corvette as the L78 option and in the Z-16 Chevelle as the L37 option. It had a bore × stroke of 4.094 in × 3.760 in (104 mm × 95.5 mm), [28] [29] and produced 375 bhp (380 PS; 280 kW) at 5600 rpm and 415 lb⋅ft (563 N⋅m) of torque at 3600 rpm. [30]
This generation introduced the Chevrolet 90° V6 family of engines, with the 200 CID (3.3 L) V6 as the base engine for the all new 1978 Chevrolet Malibu, along with the 229 CID (3.8 L) V6 and the 305 CID (5.0 L) Chevy built V8 as options. The 200 and 229 engines were essentially a small block V-8, with one pair of cylinders removed.

A special build 327 was built for GMH for the final run of the HK GTS327 by the Canadian McKinnon Industries. It was a lower compression version of the 1968 engine first used on the HK GTS327, and was dressed as a 1969 engine sporting all 1969 parts. The 327 was replaced in the mid-1969 HT Monaro by the 350 L48 developing 300 hp (224 kW).
