Hongdae (Korean: 홍대) is a neighborhood in Mapo District, Seoul, South Korea, near Hongik University ("Hongik Daehakgyo" in Korean), after which it is named. [1] It is known for its urban arts and indie music culture, local shops, clubs, cafés and entertainment.
The station is the southern end of Hongdae area, which is the centre of urban arts and indie music culture of Seoul. It is closest to the historical site of Jeoldu-san, a place where over 10,000 Koreans of the Roman Catholic faith were beheaded in 1866 under the orders of Daewon-gun.
Hongik University Station (Korean: 홍대입구역; Hanja: 弘大入口驛; RR: Hongdae-ipgu-yeok) is a station on Seoul Subway Line 2, AREX and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. As its name indicates, it serves the nearby Hongik University. It was formerly known as Donggyo Station, after the neighborhood that it serves.
Mapo is home to several universities and government buildings, and is well known for the Hongdae club district around Hongik University. After the Japan–Korea Annexation Treaty of 1910, Hapjeong-dong was known as Hapjeon-ri in 1913 and Hapjeong-jeong in 1936; it was a part of Yeonhui-myeon, which extended from Seodaemun District to Yeouido. In 1944, it became a part of the newly created Mapo District district and received its current name in 1946.
