In 1999, the organization began publishing a bimonthly English-language magazine, The American Muslim. The following year, the MAS Youth Center opened in Brooklyn, and MAS helped start the Islamic American University, based out of Southfield, Michigan, and Kansas City, Missouri, as a distant-learning program for classical Islamic studies. ICNA is an offshoot of the Muslim Students' Association (MSA), and was founded by immigrants from South Asia. [4] In 1971, a number of South Asian MSA members who had been involved in Islamic movements in their home countries developed an Islamic study circle (halaqa), in Montreal. This Halqa Ahbab Islami would become the predecessor of ICNA.

In the mid-2000s the school had around 200 students. Students came from Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Polk, and Sarasota counties. In many of those counties there were no Islamic schools, so Muslim parents in those counties enrolled their children in AYA. As of 2023, American Youth Academy has 1200 students. [1]

The Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Programs (KL-YES) are fully-funded student exchange programs administered by the U.S. Department of State.
