Hugh Tennent Tennent (29 August 1863 – 20 April 1890) was a Scottish brewer, the great-great-grandson of the founder (also Hugh Tennent) of the Wellpark Brewery now known as the Tennent's brewery. He began production of Tennent's lager in 1885, [ citation needed ] having acquired his brother's share of the business a year earlier.

The festival was founded in 1994 by Stuart Clumpas and Geoff Ellis, [4] as part of a joint venture between DF Concerts and Tennent's Lager with some help from Irish promotions company MCD Productions. [5] Stuart Clumpas left as an organiser in 2001, selling his commercial interests in the concert. [6] [7]
The festival was founded under the T on the Fringe name by DF Concerts and Tennent's Lager, with DF continuing to promote the festival after the departure of Tennent's from 2008 until 2012. [ 4 ] The festival began in 2000, with fifteen concerts in its first year.
